Some of Our Most Frequently Asked Questions about CCTV

Q. What sort of cameras do I need and how much will it cost?

A. With hundreds of options and prices available, we recommend a Recorder and Cameras to suit your budget and your situation. This all depends on you so please call us to discuss your requirements. Typically, the more you pay the higher specifications of the equipment. If you do not need high spec equipment, do not waste your money buying it.

There are many budget systems that will probably do exactly what you want.

Some general information is below.

1. Determine where the cameras will be located, inside or outside.

2. Determine the viewing distance.

3. Do you want to look at a room, the front gate or the entire back yard for instance.

4. Do you need a fixed lens camera or a vari-focal lens camera.

5. A standard lens is 3.6mm which suits many applications where a vari-focal lens can be adjusted to zoom in for a closer look at the subject to be viewed. A camera over a cash register needs to be a vari-focal camera to get a very close view of the $ notes.

6. If you want to have a camera on the upper level of a two level house, you will need a vari-focal lens so the camera lens can be adjusted for the best view. The cost of a vari-focal camera is higher than a fixed lens camera.

7. Does the cameras/s need wide dynamic range (looking into glare such as a shop front door).

8. Does the camera need to be weather proof.

9. Do you need to see at night? If so, you need a camera with Infrared (IR) capability or if there is sufficient ambient light, a true day/night camera.

10. Then distance from the camera to the viewing area determines the IR distance - 20, 30 or 50 meters?

11. The cost of including Infrared also effects the price, many of our cameras include IR to 20 metres.

Cameras vary from around $128 and up to several hundred dollars and as high as thousands of dollars for hi spec and specialised cameras.

Q. What sort of Digital Video Recorder do I need?

The most modern style of DVR is referred to as H264. There are hundreds of options and again, the one for you depends on your budget and requirements. The big name brands are more expensive and are often similar in quality to the economy models. Most situations either require a 4 channel or an 8 channel system to suit either 4 or 8 cameras. Prices for a DVR as at March 2012 range from $690 up to around $2500. The economy models are great value for money and are often ideal for most general applications.

These models include 1000 Gigabyte hard drives and are capable of remote access. This means you can connect the DVR to a network and or the Internet to look at the cameras from a remote commuter or your Iphone, Ipad etc

Q, Can I view my cameras when away from my home or business?

Yes but you must have a broadband connection to remotely access the DVR and cameras. Your current broadband modem also must be capable of what is called “port forwarding”. This can usually be determined by the model number, please enquire. If the router/modem needs to be replaced, the cost is  around $149.00 depending on the model. You will need the user name access password for your router as well as the user name and password for your internet service provider. If you have technical knowledge, you can do this yourself with the assistance of the manual that comes with the recorder. We can arrange for telephone or on-site support. Please enquire for costs. It is recommended that you get a STATIC IP address from your internet service provider (rather than the usual dynamic address).

This makes it easier to access the cameras remotely using the same settings each time.

Q. Can I install my CCTV cameras and DVR or do I need a technician to install the system?

A. This depends on you and the system purchased. If you purchase a DIY CCTV kit, if you are a little handy you can easily install the cameras . If you want to access the cameras when away from the premises via the internet, you may want some assistance installing the software and setting up the remote access. Remember, you need broadband access and you need to have a static IP address. Call us for any queries about this.

If you purchase a separate DVR and separate cameras (not in a kit form), then the camera and power leads need to be made up and terminated with fittings. This tailor made installation is far more specialised and unless you have the tools and experience, you would probably need a technician to install your CCTV system.

Q. How much would it cost to get a technician to install the system?

A. This is not easy to answer until we inspect the premises however as a rough guide, you would be looking at about 7 to 10 hours installation time. Sometimes it can take longer depending on if the system is in a kit form, where the cameras are to be mounted, if lengthy cabling and duct work is required and  where the DVR will be located. This also depends on your existing modem / router and if we need to set up the system for remote viewing. We can only quote a cost after viewing the premises. If you can install the cameras yourself as mentioned earlier and you only need the remote access and the DVR set up, then maybe just 2 hours for a technician would be enough time. Costs also depend on where your premises are located and if any travel times needs to be included.

Q. Is it better to buy a system in a DIY kit package or buy separate items?

A. This depends on your exact requirements. If installing into a single level home or small business, the DIY kit would probably be ideal and work out far cheaper. We can provide a DIY kit and change or upgrade some components (cameras) if there are special requirements. The standard kit cameras are usually Infrared cameras up to 20 meters and have fixed 3.6mm lenses. With pre made 20 metre cables, the entire cost will always be cheaper as the cables do not have to be made up on site saving times and cable costs.

If you installation requires special cameras, we can usually use a combination of a DVR KIT and swap out some cameras and make up some cables thus getting the best of both worlds.
